The genus Aechmea belongs to the bromeliad family. Aechmea is derived from the Greek word aichme (spear tip), in reference to the sharp spear-like shape of its flowerhead. The genus was originally desribed in 1794 by the Spanish botanists Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavón Jiménez.

Aechmea can be found in Central America and South America, with about 200 species, mostly epiphytic, but with some species growing in rocks.

Aechmea species and their modern hybrids can be grown in pots with a well-draining rich organic medium, partial shade, high humidity, and regular watering.
