Agave angustifolia (agave=Greek for illustrious, noble, admirable) originates from Central America. It was first described in 1812 by the English botanist Adrian Hardy Haworth.
A. angustifolia is used as the main ingredient to make the alcoholic beverage mezcal in Southern Mexico where it is grown in large quantities. It is also grown as an ornamental plant in other countries because of its desirable leaf variegation and pattern.
A. angustifolia tolerates full sun to shade and prefers a well-drained rich medium. Water sparingly, and only when the medium in dry. It can withstand brief periods of frost.
