The genus Aglaonema from the family Araceae has 30 - 40 species and was first described by Austrian botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1829.

The Aglaonema species can be found in humid shaded forests of northeast India, Southeast Asia, southern China, Indonesia, Philippines and New Guinea.

Due to their ease in cultivation as houseplants, numerous hybrids have been created, resulting in a large variety of leaf patterns and coloration. Aglaonemas thrive in a shady environment with high humidity, planted in a well-drained compost soil and watered regularly.
